Happy 9 Months!

Today is Caedmon's 9-month birthday. It's been such a joy and privilege to watch him growing, learning, and changing! Our baby is turning into a little boy. Although he likes to be close to Mommy and Daddy right now, we also see little steps (not literally, yet!) toward independence. His increased mobility, both through his walker and now by crawling, have given him opportunities to do some exploring on his own. Several times in the last week he has crawled out of the room on his own, leaving me behind to ponder his increasing confidence and sense of adventure. He's quite the expert at feeding himself, as well, and can even manipulate tricky foods like bananas, peas, egg yolk, and his new favorite, puffed rice. That's not to say mealtime isn't messy, though!

One evening we were feeding him peaches and cereal, which had turned out thicker than usual. Caedmon was not really interested in eating from the spoon, but made repeated attempts to grab the bowl, which we finally just gave him. He enthusiastically dove in, scooping up the cereal with his fingers and taking it to his mouth. It was quite a mess, but was another learning experience for him!

After the cereal was gone, his sticky little fingers had a new target - the camera!

He also knows that the sound of the garage door means his favorite playmate is home - Daddy! Several times in the last week we've been playing on the floor when Daniel came home from work. Caedmon will stop whatever he's doing, throw his toy aside, flop onto his tummy, and head for the back door in high gear. He gets so excited! It's really a joy to watch him make those connections and begin to understand how things work. We thank the Lord daily for blessing our lives so richly with this precious child.

"Not in your mouth!" - Part 2

As the title of this post suggests, we have continued to play the "Not in your mouth" game. However, it is now an ongoing challenge to make sure I am constantly vigilant about what is within Caedmon's reach, because he's gotten to be pretty quick and a little bit sneaky about what he puts in his mouth.

For example...last week, he crawled under our rocking chair and was playing, rocking it with his legs and just checking things out under there. I saw no problem with this, it seemed harmless enough and he was quite content. After a little while I picked him up and put him in his stroller to be nearby while I installed his new car seat. He was happy to watch and listen as I described what I was doing, but as I finished I realized he was chewing on something. I rushed to retrieve the "thing," which turned out to be a tag he had evidently peeled off the bottom of the rocking chair at least 15 minutes earlier.

Later in the week, I was packing for a weekend trip to Gramma and Dude's house and let him play on a blanket on the floor in our room. I looked down to see him scooting off of his blanket, with half a dust bunny hanging out of his mouth that he had fished out from under the armoire. Goodness, I try to keep our floors clean, but hadn't considered the possibility of him getting under furniture like that! Again, I removed the bunny, much to Caedmon's amusement.

Finally, on Sunday, we all went to church with Daniel's whole family. Caedmon was a little too busy and talkative for church, so I took him outside and let him sit on the sidewalk where his feet and hands would reach the grass (one of his favorite ways to entertain himself.) I watched him the whole time he was playing and didn't see anything get eaten. He fell asleep after church, slept the whole way back to the house, and after waking up and playing for a while, had lunch. His nose had been runny and he'd been a little cranky, but we didn't suspect anything unusual had happened. While eating, though, he sneezed, and I noticed something small and green coming out of his nose. I wiped it, and a whole, inch-long blade of grass came out...of his nose! Poor guy! He must have gotten it stuck in his throat until he sneezed.

Since I don't have any photos to accompany these stories, here are some recent ones just for fun. When Caedmon is too tired at suppertime, and rubs his face with his little hands...we get food (in this case, broccoli and cereal) from his chin to his eyebrows. Yum!

Now that he's scooting around on the floor, Caedmon enjoys crawling through his little play-gym tunnel. These were taken in the morning, so he's still in his pajamas.

We were in Garland this past weekend to celebrate Dude's 55th birthday. Everyone enjoyed time in the pool, including our little guy in his adorable Speedo swim trunks that his Gramma gave him! For a while, he watched an intense game of water polo from the steps, playing with his sunscreen and an extra ball.

When there was a break in the action, though, it was Caedmon's turn to splash around a little! Daniel helped him swim through the water (he was even kicking his legs!) and his Uncle Taylor, Aunt Julianne, Aunt Amanda, and Dude were all there to encourage him and make his time in the pool very entertaining.
